A SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP

August 30, 2023
DESCRIPTION

On August 2023, Clinton Jones, a Director and a 3D/VFX Artist who is also named Pwnisher on Youtube, organized a boss fight 3D community challenge.

This is my submission which is highly inspired by two games called Spider-Man: Web of Shadows and the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The boss' model originally came from my previous project called "Your Virtual Assistant" with texture changes to resemble her appearance to She-Venom. The Spider-Man model was initiated before the challenge announcement and was finished in the first week of August 2023.

The biggest challenge here was to achieve the right feel of the web and symbiote within a limited time. After a lot of research, I was able to come up with a specific type of curve mechanism which I can just duplicate as many times as I want to achieve dynamic movements. With Maya's sweep mesh tool, the modeling part of it made it easier after the animation process.

The majority of the time was spent in Autodesk Maya, environment models from Kitbash3D, and rendered by Arnold. Textures were mixtures of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Substance Painter. Final editing, visual, and sound effects were done in Adobe After Effects.

PROCESS
  • Before doing anything, I tried to do research on multiple sources on what look I should go with depending on the assets I have at the moment.

  • From Pwnisher's template, I tried to place apocalyptic buildings from Kitbash3D first to determine each position for my characters to move with.

  • Upon finishing two personal 3D projects of mine, I used the two main characters as the "boss" and "protagonist" in this scenario.

  • As Spider-Man was used as its protagonist, I came up with a story idea to have the girl as my variation of "She-Venom," where Spider-Man would try to pull her original self from its symbiote form.

  • I put a lot of time into animating both characters, even without the web first.

  • I created a rig that would be used for all webs and symbiotes on the scene.

  • More animations were added to apply to all webs and symbiotes that would go through their body movements.

  • All curves from the web rig were converted to mesh for texturing purposes.

  • Additional animations were modified to fit with the newly created mesh.

  • After I was satisfied with the entire animation, I started to work on the smoke effects by using Maya's particle and fluid system.

  • All textures were added and modified throughout the project's timeline.

  • The rendering process was made through Arnold, and more post-editing was added later on for the webs and smoke in After Effects.

  • Audio editing was done as the last part of the project by gathering multiple sound effects online.
